Two juveniles arrested for alleged assault with bottle

Two 16-year-old male juveniles from Richmond were arrested early Monday morning after allegedly hitting a man in the head with a glass bottle.

The 50-year-old injured man, whose name was not released, was discovered after a Richmond Police officer was patrolling the area of Turpin Drive shortly after midnight.

“(The officer) observed a large crowd amassed in front of an apartment building at 303 Turpin Drive,” said Sgt. Willard Reardon, public affairs officer for the Richmond Police Department. “Some bystanders flagged an officer down while he was on patrol.”

When the officer exited his vehicle, the bystanders informed him that a person in one of the apartments was injured.

Upon entering the apartment, the officer discovered the man suffering from head injuries.

“The victim indicated that the two juveniles entered his apartment, struck him in the head with a glass bottle and assaulted him,” a RPD press release states.

The victim was taken by Madison County Emergency Medical Services to the Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The extent of his injuries was not fully known, said Reardon, who added that they were not life threatening.

Officers were able to determine that the two juvenile suspects had entered another nearby apartment.

“They were in an apartment that was very close,” Reardon said. “Officers were able to track them down and subsequently get them arrested without incident.”

While searching the apartment, officers discovered one of the males hiding under a mattress in a bedroom of the apartment while the other was found hiding under blankets and clothing in another bedroom.

The juveniles, whose names were not released, were charged with second-degree assault and lodged in the Fayette County Juvenile Detention Center.

“We’re not real sure at this time about the motive,” Reardon said. “We’re not sure if something happened before that or what the deal was.”
