Teen attacked after fireworks display

A 16-year-old Rockcastle County resident who came to Richmond for the weekend fireworks display at Lake Reba was robbed in a field between Shamrock Lane and Maryland Drive, Richmond police said Wednesday.

The robbery was reported to police around 1:20 a.m. Sunday, according to Sgt. Willard Reardon, Richmond Police Department spokesman.

The victim told police he became separated from a companion following the fireworks display and caught a ride to Timothy Way, where he met three black males, Reardon said.

One of the men said he was hungry, Reardon said, and the victim took money from his pocket and offered to buy food for the group at McDonald’s.

While walking through the field, Reardon said, the men assaulted the boy and took a Motorola cell phone, $236 in cash and a Nike hat.

The victim suffered a black eye, bloody nose, cut lip and several bruises to his rib area following the assault, Reardon said. The victim’s parents were contacted and picked him up at the police station.

Attempts to locate the men have been unsuccessful, Reardon said.

Assault update

Police were able to release some additional details on an early-morning assault Tuesday on E. Irvine Street.

Darrell Nester, 41, of Richmond, was taken to Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center and then to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington following an attack that left him with several cuts. Nester was seen by an officer on E. Irvine Street with cuts to his left arm and chest.

Reardon said police believe Nester was sleeping in an abandoned house on N. Estill Avenue when someone entered the house and attacked him with a knife. The suspect then fled, but the knife police believe was used in the attack was found at the house.

No additional information on Nester’s condition was available, Reardon said, but the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Other crimes

• William S. Hacker, 25, of Union City Road, was arrested Friday for first-degree criminal mischief in connection with a May 4 incident at Waffle House on N. Keeneland Drive. Police say Hacker kicked a dent into the driver’s side door of a car at the restaurant, causing more than $1,000 in damage. Hacker was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.

• Charles A. Noland, 31, of N. Killarney Lane, was arrested Friday for second-degree burglary in connection with an alleged break-in at a Turpin Drive residence on June 12. Noland and another man police have not identified are accused of taking $180 in cash and coins from an apartment in the 300 block.

Noland was later observed in possession of a large number of coins and was arrested at his residence Friday and lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.

Police are still searching for the second suspect.

• Laqueeta L. Penman, 18, of S. Killarney Lane, was arrested Sunday for first-degree criminal mischief after officers witnessed her cutting the seats and kicking the dashboard of a car in the 100 block.

Officers extracted Penman from the vehicle and placed her under arrest. Penman told police the vehicle belonged to her boyfriend and that she was damaging it because she was angry with him.

• Almost $3,000 worth of power tools were reported stolen July 2 from a detached garage at a residence in the 600 block of Cottonwood Drive. A side door was pried open to gain entry to the garage, police said.

Taken were: a DeWalt bench grinder, reciprocating saw, jigsaw, belt sander and electric drill; a Stihl chainsaw, two weed trimmers and a leaf blower; a Bostich 18-gauge nail gun; a Porter-Cable circular saw; a Skil saw; a Bosch orbital electric hand sander; a Black and Decker jigsaw; a cordless drill with battery charger and a 300-amp battery charger on wheels.

• An apartment in the 100 block of Maple Hill Drive was broken into Sunday after the burglar pried the rear door open. A Sony 32-inch flat-screen television, Lumix digital camera, HP laptop computer and a Citizen watch, all valued at $2,210, were reported stolen.

A witness reported seeing a “suspicious white male” at the scene, Reardon said.

• About $370 in tools were stolen July 2 from a truck-mounted toolbox on a vehicle parked in the 600 block of Cottonwood Drive. Taken were a DeWalt cordless drill, a Kobalt socket set and a Milwaukee reciprocating saw.

• A counterfeit $100 bill was passed June 28 at the Dairy Queen on N. Keeneland Drive, the manager reported to police. The bill bore serial number HC13702033A.

• An apartment in the 300 block of Gibson Drive was broken into Saturday through an unlocked kitchen window. An XBox 360 video game console, four games and a digital camera, all valued at $820, were reported stolen.

• Two movie posters were stolen from outside the Cinemark theater in Richmond Centre on Saturday after their locked display cases were pried open. The posters and cases were valued at $1,200.

• A Honda moped was reported stolen Saturday from the parking lot of the Quality Quarters motel. The red 2003 model moped was valued at $2,000.

• A Walmart customer reported Saturday that her purse was stolen from her shopping cart while she loaded her purchases into her car in the parking lot. The purse contained credit cards, identification and $30 in cash.

• A black lawn mower trailer was reported stolen Saturday from outside a residence in the 100 block of Teakwood Drive. The trailer, valued at $1,100, was chained to a tree at the time of the theft.

• A car stereo was reported stolen Monday from a car in the 200 block of Wayne Drive after the driver’s side window was broken. The loss was estimated at $300.

Several other residents in the same area reported windows had been broken on their cars during the same time, but nothing was taken.

• A resident in the 300 block of Big Hill Avenue reported Monday that a Sony PlayStation and PSP were stolen from his residence. The items were valued at $200.
