Craft festival kicks off Friday

The Arts and Crafts Capitol of Kentucky will be the site of one of the region’s biggest craft events this weekend.

The Berea Craft Festival begins Friday at historic Indian Fort Theatre in the middle of the Berea College Forest. The event offers work from more than 100 nationally known artists and craftspeople, as well as demonstrations and musical entertainment.

This juried show features the work of artists from 20 states, with more than 25 percent showing in the Berea area for the first time. There will be jewelers, woodworkers, clay artists, glass artists, sculptors, watercolorists, fiber artists, photographers and other artists. There also will be craft educational demonstrations in raku firing, bowl carving, tree-to-chair furniture making, silversmithing, vegetable-dying and lamp work bead making.

For the first time, there also will be a special “Play It Again, Sam” award given to the craft artist who demonstrates the best use of recycled materials in the creation of his or her work.

The craft festival will feature strolling musicians and dance performances every day. Returning by popular demand will be Mitch Barrett, Peach Pie Jazz, Sofa King Deluxe and the delightful Berea Festival Dancers. Also appearing will be the acclaimed Berea College Blue Grass Ensemble and a debut performance by Heath Eric.

The festival will be open Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and children 12 and younger are free. Parking is free.

For visitor information, please call 1-800-598-5263.
