With July 4 falling on a Saturday this year, county, state and federal offices are closed today in observance of the holiday.
Berea City Hall is closed today, but Richmond City Hall is open. Richmond offices will be closed Monday.
“We have so much preparation to do Friday for our July 4th celebration in Lake Reba Park on Saturday that it is more practical for us to give city employees the day off on Monday,” said City Manager David Evans.
“In addition to the parks and recreation and tourism departments, the police, fire and public works departments are heavily involved with putting on the Independence Day event,” he said.
“We’re expecting an ever larger crowd than usual this year because Exile, which got its start in Richmond, will provide the main entertainment,” Evans said. “Lots of people are excited about the event and have called City Hall and the tourism office requesting information.”
In past years, crowds as big as 30,000 have thronged Lake Reba Park for July 4.
Post offices and most banks are open today and will be open Monday.
The U.S. Postal Service, which normally is open for business on Saturdays, will observe the holiday tomorrow. Post offices will be closed Saturday and no mail will be delivered.
Most banks, including their drive-thru windows, will be closed Saturday.
At least two exceptions to the Saturday bank office closings are the People’s Bank branch inside the Richmond Walmart, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Wood Forest Bank branch in the Berea Walmart, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Richmond Register office is closed today.
