Three are arrested early Saturday for shooting from car

By Brian Smith
Register News Writer

Two 19-year-old men and a 17-year-old were arrested Saturday morning after Richmond police say they shot five times from a car on Longview Drive.

Michael T. Vertress and Michael G. Murphy, both 19, and both of Manna Drive, were arrested along with a 17-year-old male around 8:05 a.m. following a traffic stop on Longview Drive.

According to Richmond police, Murphy fired five shots in the 100 block of Longview Drive, but no damage from the shots was found in the area.

A search of the car uncovered a .22-caliber pistol under the passenger seat and a knife blade under the driver’s seat.

Murphy was charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon and five counts of wanton endangerment, while Vertress was charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon for the knife blade as well as no operator’s license and no vehicle insurance.

Vertress was released on a $1,000 unsecured third-party bond from the Madison County Detention Center, while Murphy is being held in lieu of a $10,000 cash bond.

The 17-year-old was charged with public intoxication and possession of marijuana after dropping a bag of marijuana while at the police department. He was released into his parents’ custody.

Drug arrests

A Berea man was arrested March 3 for second- and third-degree possession of controlled substances after being pulled over by Richmond police.

Ryan Rigsby, 23, of Berea, was pulled over after police responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle in the 1000 block of Brandy Lane.

Rigsby was charged with public intoxication after police determined he was under the influence of controlled substances. A search of the car after Rigsby’s arrest uncovered two alprazolam tablets, a marijuana cigarette and a hydrocodone pill.

Rigsby was charged with second- and third-degree possession of controlled substances, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and public intoxication. He was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.

Police also arrested two men Saturday night for possession of a simulated controlled substance outside the Maverick Club.

John H. Meadows, 24, and Manuel Jaramillo, 31, both of Jigwater Drive, were arrested after Officer Kurt Heatherton noticed the men in a vehicle in the club’s parking lot engaged in “suspicious activity,” according to a Richmond Police Department news release.

Heatherton found seven pills believed to be Xanax in the vehicle, but further tests indicated the pills were not Xanax.

Both men were arrested for possession for sale or transfer of a substance represented as a controlled substance and lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.
