Man charged in sex-for-pills case pleads not guilty

By Brian Smith
Register News Writer

Archie Anglin entered not guilty pleas to a pair of drug indictments Wednesday in Madison Circuit Court.

Flanked by his attorney, Mike Eubanks, Anglin pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree trafficking in opiates, one count of third-degree trafficking in controlled substances, first-degree possession of controlled substances and one count of a prescription drug not in its proper container.

Anglin, 82, was indicted Dec. 4 after an investigation by Berea police into allegations that he was trading oxycodone pills to two women in exchange for sexual favors.

Police began their investigation after Anglin made numerous calls to Berea police reporting missing household items, medicine and a television.

Prosecutors dropped second- and third-degree possession of controlled substances charges against Anglin after he provided proof of prescriptions for Xanax and hydrocodone. Those charges were made after Berea Detective Lee Ann Roberts found what appeared to be hydrocodone tablets and alprazolam pills, the generic form of Xanax, in an aspirin bottle while serving Anglin with a warrant for the trafficking charges.

The possession charge and the prescription charge stem from an August arrest where Anglin was a passenger in a car stopped for improper display of registration plates.

During a search, a Berea police officer found a Levitra prescription bottle containing Oxycontin, methadone, Xanax and Lortab pills.

The possession charge is because Anglin lacked a prescription for the methadone.

Anglin was indicted on those charges Dec. 18 by a Madison County grand jury.

Anglin is due back in court Feb. 12 for a pretrial conference.

If convicted, Anglin could serve up to 10 years in prison for each of the first-degree trafficking charges, up to a year in jail for the third-degree trafficking charge, five years in prison for first-degree possession of a controlled substance and up to 90 days in jail for prescription drug not in its original container.
