Happy Thanksgiving!

Union City News

UNION CITY — Happy Thanksgiving. Hope you take time to count your blessings.

As we think about the history of our country, Mayflower and the Pilgrims, we realize we have much more to be thankful for than they had. God is good.

Kentucky Blood Center collected blood at Union City on Tuesday. The number of people donating increased from last time. The total this week was 24. Two Walmart cards were given in a drawing and yours truly was one winner! Thank you.

New windows in the Ruritan building have been installed. Almost enough money has been raised to cover the cost. Money above the windows’ need will go toward doors. The deadline for giving to the Windows Fund will be Jan. 1. If you wish to donate, contact Robert Murphy at 623-9461 for details.

The Ruritan Annual Christmas Family Dinner will be Saturday, Dec. 1, at 6:30 p.m. Club members and families are invited to attend.

At this meeting, club officers for the coming year are announced and installed. Ham and turkey will be provided. You may bring a covered dish such as vegetables or casserole.

Union City Christian Church hosted an outreach meal last Saturday at June Morning in Richmond. More than 70 people enjoyed the dinner. We understand Jeremy Steele and his crew did a fantastic job with this project.

Birthday wishes to Jeanie Guess, Saturday; Amanda Wells, Hailey Sharp and Lisa Allen Daniels, Monday; David Tipton, Tuesday; and Teresa Murphy, Wednesday.

If you have news or announcements, let me know at 623-3880 or email drtech@roadrunner.com.

The extension office has received numerous phone calls over the past couple of weeks about large wasps hovering in yards all over the county.

Maintaining a controlled breeding and calving season can be one of the most important management tools for cow-calf producers.
Uniform, heavier and more valuable calves are key reasons to keep the breeding season short.

I often flash back to the days from the mid to late 1930s when I was a paper boy.
There were 10 or 12 of us who rolled out of bed at 5 a.m. every day, jumped on our bicycles and headed downtown to the Glyndon Hotel and picked up our papers for delivery.

The following were included in last year’s exams and were answered by 16-year-old high school students. The answers are genuine, and we must remember that these youngsters will grow up to vote, marry and become parents. It’s a scary thought.

Hello readers, it’s a stormy Monday evening as I write this, and I’ve been thanking the Lord all day for the good rain – over an inch in the gauge now, and it looks like more before morning.
