Powwow, other fall events highlight this week

Paint the Town Pink starts Thursday

RICHMOND — Several fall events are taking place this week in Madison County, most notably the Richmond Powwow at Battlefield Park on US 421 north of Kingston.

Other big events are the Thursday kickoff for Paint the Town Pink and Kirksville Day on Saturday.

Two special guests will highlight this year’s powwow.

Arvel Bird, a musician who plays celtic, folk, Native American and blues/rock music will be performing. Larry Sellers, the actor who played Cloud Dancing in the television show Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, also also make an appearance to dance at the powwow.

The powwow will begin Friday morning with school groups visiting throughout the day, according to Jan Quigg, who has played a lead role in organizing the event for the past 20 years.

The gates will open to the public at 5 p.m. Friday with grand entry ceremony at 6.

Saturday and Sunday, gates open at 10 a.m. with grand entries at noon. Saturday the event will continue until 9 p.m. On Sunday, the powwow’s closing ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 for Adults and $2 for children.

 

Local government

In addition to seasonal community events, important local government meetings will take place this week.

The Madison Fiscal Court will convene 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the county courthouse in Richmond, with the Richmond City Commission in session at 6 p.m. that day.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, the Madison County school board will conduct a budget review in the main lecture lab of Madison Central High School (gymnasium entrance).

 

Thursday

Baptist Health-Richmond will host a “Mammogram and a Movie” event 6 p.m. Thursday at the Richmond Centre Cinemark.

Admission is free, but reservations are required because of limited seating. Door prizes and light snacks will be available.

In addition to a movie that organizers promise will be “great for a ladies night out, the event will include an “ask the doc” session as well as informational displays.
