Elmwood researcher to address historical society Thursday

RICHMOND — The Madison County Historical Society will hear a presentation on “Elmwood: The Lives Behind the Mystery” at its quarterly meeting Thursday night.

The speaker will be Crystal Allen-Daniel, a 2013 University of Kentucky library science graduate who processed the Elmwood papers for Eastern Kentucky University Special Collections and Archives when she was a student.

Allen-Daniel read hundreds of family letters during her work and “probably has a greater understanding of the Watts family (which built and owned Elmwood) than anyone around,” said Jackie Couture, historical society president.

“She will be highlighting some of the letters that are especially interesting. And of course, she will also have photos of the family,” Couture said.

The meeting will take place in the community room of Central Bank, 305 W. Main St., at 7 p.m.

Elmwood, which was off limits to the public for most of its existence, will be the setting this evening for the Richmond Area Arts Council’s annual fall gala.

Trustees of the Emma Watts estate transferred ownership of Elmwood, built in 1887, to Eastern Kentucky University in 2011.
