Empty Bowls helps fill empty bellies

Benefits local food banks

RICHMOND — Around 250 handmade bowls were filled to the brim Thursday with soups like Autumn Veggie, Ecuadorian Quinoa and Peanut or Smokey Kale and White Bean for the annual Empty Bowls event at Berea College.

In exchange for $10, guests were served a meal of soup in bowls donated by the college’s ceramic apprenticeship program and local potters. The bowl is kept as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.

Proceeds from Empty Bowls, nearly $2,500, were donated to local food banks, said Heather Schill, assistant director of the Center for Excellence in Learning Through Service, which co-sponsored the event.

Kathleen Kennedy was at her fourth Empty Bowls event Thursday but said she also tries to attend the Empty Bowls event at First Baptist Church on the Eastern Bypass in Richmond, scheduled for April 11 (see "Related Links" to the right for details).

She attends these events to “have the blessing of food, and to remember that not all share in this blessing,” she said. “This is a little something I can do to address the issues of hunger and nutrition.”

The event also helps her focus on “living simply,” she added.

As guests entered the college’s Woods-Penniman Building Thursday, they went through a line to choose their own bowl and then continued on to choose a soup.

When picking a bowl, Kennedy said she “waits for the bowl to choose me.”

She chose her bowl because the glaze made patterns inside, one of which looked like a horse, she said.

The glaze also looked as if it had dripped down the sides, which was symbolic for her, she said. “My cup runneth over.”
