My wife and I thank Jane Harris for a tour of her blueberry patch Wednesday morning. From her 30-years of experience, she gave us a brief summary of blueberry culture. In addition to the right soil and water, the most critical matter is netting to keep the birds out. Without nets, birds will always find the ripe berries before she does.
Jane’s berry patch contains about 200 bushes from 5 to 7 feet tall, and they must be picked every day from early June to late July. Berries should be picked in the early morning before 9 a.m., so picking begins at 6:30 a.m. Jane says the berries are now in “jam and jelly mode.” In addition to the picking, she has been making jams and jellies. Certainly, this is a fascinating project, and it is near Union City!
Belated birthday wishes to Lola Harris, last Friday; Bonnie Russell and Richard Childers, Monday; Macie Eades, Tuesday; and Brandon Abney, Wednesday.
