NEWBY — Let me introduce myself. My name is Carol Prewitt, wife of William Allen (Buck) Prewitt.

Buck was born and raised in Newby, and we live in the house where his parents, James Edmond and Edith, kept house.

Although I have lived in seven different states over my lifetime, Newby is now home to me in more than just the physical sense.

Newby must have been quite a place back in the day. I have been told there was a school, a post office, a buggy repair/mechanic shop, funeral home, furniture store and five general stores. Of course, there were the hard-working farmers, who made up most of the population.

I have heard many stories and tall tales, some of them happy, some sad, many funny, from the people who have lived those stories or been told the facts by family members.

Newby is a great community, and we are trying to keep the old values and traditions alive for the next generation.

If you come to visit be sure to stop by the Newby Grocery and have a great sandwich made by owner, Jerry Rose. He may even share a tall tale with you or pull out his guitar and sing a tune.

We have three churches nearby, the Richmond House of Prayer, Newby Baptist and Newby Union, a non-denominational church. Newby Union hosts a gospel sing every third Saturday of the month and invites everyone to join in.

I will be writing a regular column of community news for the Richmond Register. So, if you have any news you would like to share, please contact me. If you have any special memories, I would like to hear that, too.
