FSA reminds producers crop reporting late file fees waived

MADISON COUNTY — Although crops reported after July 15 will be considered late file, the late file fee will be waived for this year for crops reported July 15 through Sept. 15.

Producers are reminded that Sept. 16 is the final signature date for the DCP contract (grain bases), an extension of the Aug. 2 date.



PREVENTED PLANTING OR FAILED ACREAGE

To report prevented or failed acreage, producers must complete Form CCC-576, Notice of Loss for applicable crops. Reporting prevented or failed acreage to FSA will ensure compliance with current farm programs, and possible eligibility for future disaster programs. If producers miss the reporting deadline for prevented planting, they may still report prevented planting acreage as long as the disaster condition may be verified by a field visit and a late filing fee is paid.



 2014 REPORTING

Reporting forage crops and pastures is also required. For 2014, perennial forage, fall wheat, and other fall seeded small grains will have a Dec. 15, 2013, reporting date.

Forage Tip of the Month – Common vs. Certified Seed

 Once you have selected a forage species and variety, it is recommended to buy a quality seed that is high in germination rate and free of weed seed.

Buying certified seed guarantees that the requirements for both of these parameters has been met and should be the first purchasing option.

Non-certified seed, or common seed, does not guarantee a certain level of performance as the specific variety is unknown, whereas certified seed has met federal and state certifications to verify that the performance of the variety has not been compromised or contaminated via cross pollination with lower-producing varieties.

Once a seed source has been located, be sure to order seed well in advance of planting to assure that it will be available when needed.
