Faith-based mothers group
A local chapter of Mothers of Preschoolers has found a home at Red House Baptist Church.
The international organization gives mothers an opportunity to be together, talk, develop leadership skills and learn ways they can serve others, according to Linda Coulter, director of childhood ministries at the church.
The group meets bimonthly from 9 to 11 a.m. the first and third Fridays of the month in the church’s gym. The church is at 2301 Red House Road.
Childcare is provided and meetings often have speakers, crafts, discussion time and “always food,” Coulter said.
The Christian-based group is always open to new members, she said. The group is exclusively for women, she added.
“It’s a great opportunity for them to meet other moms and realize they’re not out there alone,” Coulter said. “Several of the moms have developed friendships they wouldn’t have otherwise.”
The Red House Baptist Church chapter of MOPS, as the group is also know, is considering adding an evening meeting time, Coulter said.
Some mothers in Madison County have met while attending other support activities and created their own informal parenting groups aided by social media.
Berea resident Danielle Capillo said the Berea Mothers Forum (also known as Berea Mommas) has an active following on its Facebook page.
“We share our joys and concerns, and ask questions,” Capillo said.
The group also arranges get-togethers through the Facebook page and find ways to support each other, she said. Organizing to provide meals for a family with a newborn is one example of that support, Capillo said.
While several members are supporters of attachment parenting, which promotes practices like “baby-wearing” (using slings or wraps to carry a baby close to the body) and breast-feeding, Capillo said the group has a “judgment-free atmosphere” that welcomes all parents.
Capillo said she started attending meetings when her son was four months old.
“It was essential for me to go every week,” Capillo said.
