Berea Methodists host annual Lenten Luncheons

BEREA — The annual Lenten Luncheon Series begins Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the Berea United Methodist Church, and continues each Wednesday through March 27, the Wednesday before Easter Sunday. This year’s theme is “Where Love and Mercy Meet”.

 Each luncheon begins at Noon in the Parish House, 101 Fee Street, Berea, with a brief program including interesting speakers and special music. Following the program, a light lunch will be provided. Those attending should be able to see the program, enjoy a meal, and return to work within 45 minutes; the event ends around 12:45 P.M. Reservations are not necessary; simply come and join in the spirit of community and in celebration of the season of Lent.

The first Lenten Lunch will feature the Rev. Ken Southgate as speaker. Rev. Southgate is a product of Rev. Charles Bertrand's ministry.  Raised at Centenary UMC in Lexington, Ken answered the call to cams ministry after ten years in television writing and production.  Upon graduation from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1994, Ken was appointed the full-time director of the EKU Wesley Foundation, where he as served these 19 years.  Ken also serves as a part-time EKU instructor in the Department of Communication, as well as on the praise team at Richmond First UMC.  He is married to Paula Taylor of Jeffersontown UMC, and together they have four sons, Daniel, Michael and David. A musical prelude will be provided by pianist Tom Seel.

Other speakers include Flora Washburn, St. Joseph - Berea Hospital chaplain on Feb. 27; Marvin Farmer, businessman and former city official, on March 6; Tim and Ruth Walker will both speak and sing on March 13; Warren May, local dulcimer maker and businessman, will speak March 20; Dr. Sarah White of St. Joseph Berea Family Medicine is the final speaker on March 27.
