YMCA’s ‘Team Lean’ competition to kick off this month

RICHMOND — The Telford Community Center YMCA in Richmond is offering a way for residents to show their competitive side while learning the best ways to eat well and exercise regularly.

“Team Lean” 12-week weight-loss competition signups began Wednesday and will continue through Jan. 19. The program starts Jan. 20 with a private weigh-in for participants, according to head coordinator and YMCA personal trainer Kristen Girton.

Each participant determines if he or she will enter as part of a team or as an individual. Each particant pays a $60 entry fee. Family members (husband, wife and dependent children ages 12 to 22) pay no more than $100 to sign up as a team, Girton said.

Teams of two to five family members, friends, co-workers and individuals will compete to lose the highest percentage of weight during the competition. Cash prizes are given to the top three teams and the top three individuals at the end of the 12 weeks.

Weigh-ins occur every Monday, and the competition will end April 14.

“Team Lean encourages participants to stay focused on losing weight through eating healthy and exercise,” Girton said. “Participants will receive a free body fat analysis provided by myself.”

Team Lean participants also will get to sample some of the YMCA’s free classes, such as Zumba and circuit training classes.

Competitors will receive nutrition guidance from a registered dietician, receive educational materials and have the opportunity to purchase a short-term YMCA membership for three months at the special rate of $45 for individuals and $75 for families.

Team Lean participants can choose to convert their short-term membership to adult, youth or family regular memberships without having to pay a joining fee if done no later than March 3, Girton added.

“This is an amazing opportunity for the public and current Y members to motivate each other and make healthy living a part of their lives from ages 12 and up,” Girton said. “Participants choose their own food choices, portion size and exercise program. Participants make their own exercise choices and can choose to work out at the Y or another option such as walking in their neighborhood.”
