My memories...

MADISON COUNTY — I remember attending homecoming at the Doylesville United Methodist Church as a child.

It was a time for laughter, for family members and strangers to come together and enjoy the fellowship.

The church was always packed with kids and adults. I remember getting that look from my mother, because we were making too much noise or not paying attention.

I also remember the preacher getting loud, when he got the spirit. I can still hear the singing and the praying. Afterwards, the church doors would open and us kids would spill out.

The ladies of the church would go to unloading baskets and boxes of the best cooked food a person could ever have.

The men would set up tables under the shade trees. After the food was placed on the tables, people went up one side and down the other side. I can still remember my Granny Wall’s homemade banana sandwiches with some kind of pudding in the middle. Plates and plates of good ol’ fried chicken, meat loaf and any vegetable you could ask for. There were cakes and pies of all kinds and flavors, plus all the tea and lemonade you could drink. All the ladies were good cooks.

And when you thought you could not eat another bite, Paw Paw Wall would come out with a huge watermelon. It was always the very best watermelon of the season and so cold. I never knew how he got it so cold.

Nobody had to worry about us kids not being quiet in the afternoon. I don’t think we ever made a peep. We just sat and listened to the music.
