The Madison County Farmers Market is now accepting EBT and debit cards

BEREA — The Madison County Farmers Market is now accepting EBT and debit cards.

To use your card, simply go to the table with the banner marked EBT/Debit Cards Accepted Here.  There you will be greeting by Lynn Grove, a market volunteer. He will be able to assist you in purchasing tokens that will act as “cash” with participating vendors within the market. These vendors will have a sign that says, “We Accept Market Tokens.”

SNAP customers will be able to purchase EBT tokens, and debit customers will be able to purchase debit tokens.  Both types of card users will have to enter their PIN in order to complete a transaction.

Debit card users will be charged a $1 transaction fee in order to cover fees associated with using the wireless machine. No fee is charged to EBT card users.

The debit token users will be able to purchase anything vendors have for sale. EBT token users can purchase fruit/vegetables, breads/baked goods that are labeled and intended for home consumption, meat (includes poultry and fish), honey, jams, dairy products and eggs.

The market vendors hope this will be a benefit to their customers.

If anyone has any questions, please ask at the market volunteer table at the market.

The Madison County Farmers Market meets on Tuesday and Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon and is located in the Lowe’s parking lot off the Eastern Bypass in Richmond.

In the Berea area, the Berea Farmers Market ( meets Tuesdays and Fridays in the greenspace behind the Promenade Gallery off Centre Street from 4:30 to 7 p.m. They are also open in another location on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Oldtown L&N Depot/Visitor Center. At this time, the Berea Market does not accept EBT or debit cards.

Colorado potato beetle

There have been some reports of large numbers of Colorado potato beetles this year.mThese insects are yellow and black-striped with an orange head. They have proven resistant to many common insecticides. Below are a few options:

• Scout your plants early in the morning and pick the beetle off of your plants. Discard into a bucket of soapy water.

• Another option is to cover your plants with a floating row cover or thin material until midseason or until bloom.  This insect is resistant to many insecticides.

• Look for chemicals with the active ingredient esfenvalerate, permethrin, spinosid or cyfluthrin for control.

Educational programs of the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability or national origin.
