Even though it’s the middle of winter, it’s not too early to start thinking about summer camp or summer jobs. 4-H has a way to combine both. All 4-H camps are now hiring staff for the summer camping season.
Many opportunities for rewarding summer jobs have recently been posted. Applications must be completed online at http://www.uky.edu/hr/ukjobs. For more information about the application process, go to http://www2.ca.uky.edu/4-h/camp/employment. The deadline for applications is March 4.
All staff members are required to be trained and certified in first aid and CPR before they can be employed by the 4-H camping program (prior to the beginning of camp staff training).
Prospective applicants need to be aware that all employees are required to attend the pre-camp training program and summer in-service trainings provided at each location. Training dates in 2014 are:
· High ropes training for ropes instructors: April 12-14 at Lake Cumberland 4-H Educational Center, Jabez
· Managers training: April 26-28 at Lake Cumberland 4-H Educational Center
· All camp staff training: May 19-22 at Lake Cumberland 4-H Educational Center
· On-site training: May 23-24 at each camp.
All camp employees must have a health examination conducted by licensed medical personnel within the last 24 months prior to the start of camping season.
Pre-employment national criminal background/national sex offender checks will be conducted on all new University of Kentucky employees.
Staff will work 40 hours or more per camping session (four or five days). Interviews for 2014 (including returning staff) will be conducted beginning March 11.
4-H Camping in Kentucky is one of the largest co-educational camping programs in the nation. The camps are located at four sites in the state, encompassing between 300 and 1,500 acres. All sites are American Camp Association (ACA) accredited, and the program hosts more than 8,000 young people each summer. Summer 4-H Camps are co-educational for 9- to 14-year-olds and are four to five days in length. Staff has separate living quarters from the campers.
If you are interested in just attending 4-H Summer Camp as a volunteer or want information about a child attending camp, please contact the Madison Cooperative Extension Service. Madison County 4-H Summer Camp information will be available in early March. This year, Madison County will camp June 30-July 3.
Educational programs of the Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, sex, religion, disability or national origin.
