Union City Ruritan building getting new floor

UNION CITY — If you have been to the Union City Ruritan this week to have a morning coffee, you already know that nobody is there.

The reason is new flooring is being installed and everything had to be moved out for a few days. Maybe next week things will be back to normal.

Funds are still being collected for the flooring expense. If you wish to help, contact Robert Murphy, treasurer.

Union City Baptist Church will host Movie Night on Friday at 7 p.m.

Looking to the future, Union City Baptist is planning a mission trip to Pascagoula, Miss., the week of Oct. 19-26. Contact Bill Hendricks if you are interested in going on this mission trip.

Union City Christian will host an instrumental group Sunday, Aug. 11,  at 6 p.m. Firebird Orchestra from Lexington will present a concert. This youth orchestra is composed of a variety of flutes. Austin Rieck from Union City is a member of the group. This is a free concert with a love offering taken. All are welcome.

Happy Birthday this week to Adam Oliver, Friday; Ruth White, Sunday; James Gabbard, Pat Stringer and Jesse Chula, Monday; Jennifer Miller and Emily Goode, next Thursday.

If you have news or announcements let me know at 623-3880 or email drtech@roadrunner.com

The extension office has received numerous phone calls over the past couple of weeks about large wasps hovering in yards all over the county.
This insect is called the cicada killer, and despite its aggressive name, it is not something to be scared of.

Maintaining a controlled breeding and calving season can be one of the most important management tools for cow-calf producers.
Uniform, heavier and more valuable calves are key reasons to keep the breeding season short.

I often flash back to the days from the mid to late 1930s when I was a paper boy.
There were 10 or 12 of us who rolled out of bed at 5 a.m. every day, jumped on our bicycles and headed downtown to the Glyndon Hotel and picked up our papers for delivery.

The following were included in last year’s exams and were answered by 16-year-old high school students. The answers are genuine, and we must remember that these youngsters will grow up to vote, marry and become parents. It’s a scary thought.
