We wish Jim and Edna Cox of Richmond a happy anniversary as they celebrate 69 years together next Monday, Feb. 18.
Their family consists of daughter Joyce and her husband Frank Chaney; and son, Glenn and wife Emma Cox. There are four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
About 150 years ago, Willis Martin attended a public hanging in Clark County, Ky. Solomon Smith was hanged for killing his own father.
Smith’s wife, Mary Ryan Smith, was present at the hanging.
Mr. Martin had great sympathy for the weeping widow and became her friend.
That friendship grew into a marriage which produced 10 children. One of those children was Thacker Quesenberry Martin who was born in 1865. He usually is referred to as T.Q. Martin.
While working for a saw mill at Ford in 1889, he began preaching in area churches.
That same year, T.Q. Martin entered the College of the Bible at Lexington where he graduated in 1895.
In August of 1895, T.Q. Martin conducted a revival at Union City Christian Church and 81 members were added.
Mr. Martin is listed as being regular minister at Union City in 1900, but because he was more interested in evangelism, he was only here for a few months. He spent most of his life doing evangelistic work throughout 32 states.
In a 1953 writing about T.Q. Martin, Earl I. West said, “Brother Martin ranked among the best preachers of his time. His services were continually sought after. He was earnest yet humble, and a man of strong emotions. He never ‘lost’ his audiences. They laughed with him through his remarkable wit, and more frequently, wept with him through his melancholy stories.”
