Garden Club attends Stephen Hein workshop

RICHMOND — The Richmond Garden Club attended a Stephen Hein workshop at his florist shop on Winchester Road in Lexington.

Stephen was recognized in the 2010 and 2011 editions of “Best of Wedding by the Knot” and is a multiple winner of Ace Magazine’s Best Local Florist. As the owner-operator of E. Stephen Hein Florist, he has been creating innovative floral design for many years.

The members were shown how to use bowls, pitchers and fruits and vegetables in the place of vases.

He also showed how to utilize trees, vines and vegetables that are grown in the back yard.

Hostesses were Carol Rogow, Cindy Palka and Betty Tolar.

Winter garden tip

The weather changes in Kentucky can be hard on plants. It is important to keep evergreens watered during winter months and after a hard freeze, to apply a fresh layer of mulch.

Plan ahead.

Now is the time to plan for your spring garden. If you are just creating a garden, decide on the look you want. Contemporary, informal or traditional.

Keep in mind routes and navigation. A straight path is more formal while a curving path is more relaxed.

Keep a good balance between flat open spaces and vertical spaces, such as trees and buildings.

In a small area, keep one focal point to draw the eye.

When choosing plants, keep in mind sun or shade exposure and wet or dry locations. Selected plants should tolerate existing conditions.
