A Rose is a Rose is a Rose

NORTH SIDE — I don’t know what you think about when someone mentions the month of June, but I certainly know what is on my mind at the very mention of that particular month.

I have six, hardy Knock-Out rose bushes planted along the front of my house. Red. They all bear the most beautiful red roses you have ever seen.

I have had neighbors ask me what kind of rose bushes I have planted simply because they are so impressively attractive and prolific. They bloom continually until the first frost of the year.

There is only one problem with my beautiful roses; they do not emit that legendary fragrance associated with most roses.

I suppose I am spoiled because my childhood home in the mountains was surrounded by a variety of old-fashioned rose bushes, and these roses yielded the most wonderful, precious aroma unique only to a fragrant rose.

As of late, science and genetics have made great strides. I am waiting for some brilliant geneticist, who loves the scent of roses as much as I do, to prefect the Knock-Out roses so they really will knock people out with a fragrance to match their beauty.
