Union City Ruritan has first meeting of year

UNION CITY — Union City Ruritan first meeting of the year is Monday, January 20, at 7 p.m. We want to remind all members it is time to pay dues. It might be good to know that payment of dues is not income for the club. Actually, national dues have been more than you are asked to pay.

The local club is sending more dues to Ruritan National than what is collected. The message is, if you are a member, we hope you pay your dues and participate in club activities during the year. Each meeting begins with a meal followed by a business meeting. On many occasions, there will be a special program or guest speaker. Those who volunteer for the Union City Fire Department must also be members of the Ruritan.

From the web site: “Ruritan National has nearly 30,000 members throughout the United States, that work to improve more than 1,100 local communities. Since the organization’s beginning in 1928, Ruritan Clubs have served America with Fellowship, Goodwill, and Community Service. Ruritan is a civic service organization made up of local clubs in urban areas, small towns and rural communities.

Ruritan’s purpose is to create a better understanding among people and through volunteer community service, make America’s communities better places in which to live and work. The slogan of Ruritan is ‘Fellowship, Goodwill and Community Service.’ Club membership represents a cross-section of the community in which the club serves, and is not restrictive with regard to occupation, social position, or any other specific criteria.”

Union City has experienced grief in recent days. Our sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Mrs. Georgia Turpin last week. This week we send sympathy out to the family of Dana Hoover. Both were affiliated with the Union City Baptist Church.

Birthday wishes to Karan Pratt, Saturday; Luke Taylor, Sunday; Scott Parke, Walter Goode and Scott Anderson, Monday; Lynn Broomfield, Manning Sewell, Karen Stewart and Matthew Gross, next Thursday. If you have news or announcements let me know at 623-3880 or email
