Glad to be in Kentucky

Hello readers. It is a warm Monday evening here in Paint Lick. I just finished a phone conversation with my sister Peg in Palm Springs, Calif., and she tells me they have 108 degrees out there most every day. I am glad to be in Kentucky!

I had my sister Joyce and my niece Sarah over for Sunday dinner. We had a variety of garden vegetables and their company was excellent.

It’s canning time again for me and since I already have most of the cucumbers picked, I feel really good, but now it’s green bean weather and I’m wondering if it will ever end. I suppose I’ll never be satisfied. I heard my neighbor, Rena Callahan once say, “if you didn’t have something to worry over, you’d find something, especially in the garden.” I do love to take care of a garden, but it is always way ahead of me.

I was proud to see so many really good friends at the memorial services for James Caldwell on Saturday at Wallacetown Baptist Church. The speakers, the Rev. Ted Faulconer and the Rev. John Todd delivered a wonderful memorial for one of Paint Lick’s most memorable gentlemen. Many, many thanks to the both of you. Mr. Ramey Taylor, formerly of Paint Lick, highlighted the services with two very beautiful songs.

The barbecue at the Paint Lick Sportsman’s Club was good, but as the evening went on, the food got a whole bunch better, or so I thought. Many thanks to everyone who helped. We made enough to make the evening a success. The new, wooden steps at the back of the club are just the right kind. Ron Adkins and Deborah Messenger did a fine job of replacing the old iron set of steps, but then those two are a fine couple.

The good news is ... at least for most of the Alexander family ... our annual reunion will be on Saturday, Aug. 29. It will be conducted at Lighthouse Baptist Church, 1371 Gabbard Town Rd. The gathering will begin at 9 a.m. I hope to get the word out in time with my news, so if you are reading this column, please pass it on. I wish to say thank you to all the congregation at Lighthouse for the use of their building and to my brother Bobby for all his help in the organizing the reunion.

The Paint Lick Family Clinic will be closed Aug. 3-7. They resume normal hours on Monday, Aug.10.
