RICHMOND — Madison County will continue to have two Republicans and one Democrat in its delegation to state House of Representatives as Rita Smart, D-Richmond, and Donna Mayfield, R-Winchester, won re-election by comfortable margins and Republican Jonathan Shell of Lancaster won the seat left open by the retirement of long-term legislator Lonnie Napier, R-Lancaster.
The 36th District includes all of Garrard County as well as eastern, western and southern Madison County.
Shell won in both counties, outpolling Bud Montgomery of Berea by 1,301 votes, 6,580 to 5,279, in Madison. Shell carried his home county by 3,703 votes, 5,353 to 1,650, for an overall margin of 5,004.
Donna Mayfield also will continue to represent the northern portion of Madison County that falls in 73rd District and all of Clark County after outpolling her opponent JoEllen Reed here by 1,135 votes, 2,523 to 1,388. In Clark County, Mayfield’s margin was 951, 8,115 to 7,164.
Incumbent Rita Smart will continue representing Madison County, including all of Richmond and parts of Berea, in the 81st District.
Smart beat Republican Mary McGill Long by 3,820 votes, 10,263 to 6,443.
