An art exhibit opening Tuesday will feature a collaborative effort between Eastern Kentucky University students and local young adults with autism.
“Socializing: Photos by Young Adults With and Without Autism” will on display at the Gallery on Main, according to Dr. Mary Ellen Thompson, graduate coordinator and associate professor in EKU’s Occupational Therapy Department.
Gallery on Main is inside Community Trust Bank, 128 W. Main St. in Richmond.
In the second half of the spring semester, a group of Thompson’s students have been facilitating a social skills group for people with autism.
“We did a photography assignment in which the students and participants were asked to take photographs of what they consider to be important to their social life,” Thompson said.
Both the group participants and the EKU graduate students will have their photos shown in the exhibit.
Ten college students worked with six group members, who range in age from 14 to their mid-20s. Some of the group participants are EKU students as well, Thompson said.
The exhibit will open Tuesday with a reception from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
