Mayfield teaches community about ‘Christmas Around the World’

Student-created cards available through Dec. 20

RICHMOND — Hallmark needed third-grade Mayfield Elementary students to create holiday cards to teach the community about Christmas traditions around the world, their teachers told them.

With this fictional challenge in mind, students went about researching, creating, assembling and selling their own custom-made Christmas cards over the past nine weeks. The proceeds from the card sale will help fund a trip to the Louisville Zoo in April.

On Friday, around 35 community members, as well as teachers and students throughout the day, entered the gymnasium for a Christmas cross-cultural experience.

Tables, and students themselves, were decorated to represent each of the 12 chosen countries.

Students rehearsed for a week to speak with visitors about their country, said third-grade teacher Paige Walker.

Through their research, students discovered all 12 countries had similar traditions, such as gift givers, decorations and celebratory cuisine, she said.

Students conducted peer editing and used what they learned about color choice and detail placement when designing each card.

“When the day came to send the cards off for publishing, the students had a lengthy discussions about their accomplishments and pride,” Walker said.

After the cards were complete, students learned about assembly lines. Team members each were given jobs as counters, quality control personnel, runners and ribbon tiers so the cards could be ready to sell Friday.

More than 400 cards were sold, Walker said.

Additional cards are available at Mayfield Elementary, 300 Bond Street, through Dec. 20. Contact Paige Walker at 625-6050. A package of four cards, with envelopes, is $2.
