Teachers put to work at McTeacher Night

$1,000 raised for Daniel Boone PTA

MADISON COUNTY — The lobby and drive-thru of McDonald's, 485 Eastern Bypass, were flooded Tuesday with Daniel Boone Elementary School students, parents and teachers during the second annual McTeacher Night.

It was a night for the school to raise money and for parents to take a break from cooking dinner, said Tonya Singleton, treasurer of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association.

But mostly, she said, “the kids wanted to see their teachers,” who were working the cash registers, baking in the kitchen and selling cookies through the drive-thru. Principal Shane Lakes could be seen on the front line taking orders and making change.

This is the second year Daniel Boone has partnered with McDonald's to raise funds for the school’s PTA. More than 20 teachers participated, Singleton said.

Teachers worked in the restaurant from 4 to 7 p.m. and earned $390, which is 15 percent of the restaurant’s profit during that time.

The PTA also received 100 percent of the $472 profit from the sale of chocolate chip cookies, which were donated by McDonald's.

After adding the $20 from the tip jar, McTeacher Night raised $861. McDonald's pitched in a little extra to bring the total to $1,000.

“For an event that lasts just three hours, that’s fabulous,” Singleton said.

McTeacher Night is one of the top-grossing events for the PTA, which has raised nearly $13,000 since the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, she said.

“It’s been an exceptionally good year,” she added.

The PTA uses the money to help fund field trips, educational magazines, prizes for the Accelerated Reader program, the teacher appreciation luncheon, academic teams, the fifth-grade graduation and teacher requests, such as costumes and items for the classrooms.

“We help with whatever the school needs,” Singleton said. “The more we raise, the more we can put back into the school.”
