First Lady’s graduation speech to be telecast at EKU Center for the Arts

Register staff report

RICHMOND — To accommodate those who would like to view First Lady Michelle Obama’s May 11 commencement address at Eastern Kentucky University but will be unable to obtain tickets, the ceremony will be telecast live at the EKU Center for the Arts.

Obama will address degree candidates from the colleges of education and business and technology at 7:30 p.m. May 11 in the Alumni Coliseum.

“For the convenience of those who prefer to avoid the crowds and waiting in security lines when entering Alumni Coliseum, the evening commencement ceremony will be screened live at the EKU Center for the Arts,” said Marc Whitt, EKU spokesperson.

Watch from the EKU center will mean comfortable seats, no hassle, free to all, no ticket required and plenty of parking, he said.

The EKU Athletic Ticket Office, located in Alumni Coliseum, will be open extended hours on April 22 for graduating students to pick up their 7:30 p.m. commencement tickets. All other days the ticket office will close at 4:30 p.m.

Whitt also noted that the First Lady is not being paid an honorarium to speak, but she will receive an honorary degree from the university. Her travel expenses also will not be covered by the university, he said.
