WACO — During Waco Elementary School’s Winter Olympics and 100th Day of Learning celebration Friday, students were not celebrating school days gone by, but what they were able to accomplish in those 100 days, said Principal Venessa Worley.

Every student, teacher and staff member has been studying the cultures of England, Italy, China, Canada, France, Mexico, United States, Jamaica and the Bahamas to represent their chosen country at Friday’s celebration.

The opening ceremony began with the Parade of Nations as students carrying homemade torches and flags marched around the gymnasium and followed their teachers into the stands.

Students recited the Pledge of Allegiance, a teacher sang the national anthem and the entire assembly joined in the reading of the school’s vision and mission statements.

Ambassadors for each grade level then presented what students had learned in the first 100 days of school.

Afterwards, students laughed and cheered on their teachers as they competed in their own winter games of scooter relay, basketball and archery.
