The Daniel Boone Orff Ensemble

First elementary group to represent Madison County at state conference

Register Staff Report

RICHMOND — The Daniel Boone Elementary Orff Ensemble entertained Thursday during the student showcase of the monthly Madison County School Board meeting.

Students selected for the audition-only group learn to play small percussion instruments, such as marimbas, xylophones and many other non-pitched instruments. These instruments were designed specifically for elementary students by composer Carl Orff, from which their name is derived.

The ensemble was among groups selected to perform in February at the Kentucky Music Educators Association conference in Louisville. It will be the first elementary group to represent Madison County at KMEA.

The Daniel Boone Orff ensemble began in 2005 with only seven members. Over the years, it has grown to more than 70.

The group is directed by teachers Tara Alcorn and Mary Carole Tate.
