One arrested after Sunday home invasion

Victim tied up, assaulted

RICHMOND — Police have made an arrest in connection with a home invasion Sunday that left a disabled man with several injuries.

Steven J. Sowers, 30, North Estill Avenue, was charged the day after the incident with first-degree robbery and first-degree unlawful imprisonment.

However, a second suspect remains at large.

Officers were sent to a home in the 300 block of Jason Drive at 6:07 p.m. Sunday, according to an RPD report.

A 61-year-old man reported he was assault and robbed. He responded to a knock at his door, believing it was one of his children.

Instead, when he opened the door, two men forced their way inside and ordered him to the floor, according to the report. Both intruders wore bandanas on their faces, the victim told police.

One of the men took an RCA voice recorder the man kept near his recliner, and they began searching his home. Two bottles of prescription methadone pills were taken, the report stated.

The victim, who uses a walker for mobility, was struck in the face repeatedly while he was on the floor. The men took $1,200 from his pocket, and then used electrical cord to tie his hands and put him in a closet, according to the RPD.

The victim said the men kicked him repeatedly while forcing him into the small closet.

The attackers then fled from the apartment, also taking a silver Nokia cell phone.

The victim freed himself from the restraints and called for help. He suffered cuts to a knee, both wrists from the tightness of the restraints, and to both arms. He also had a large contusion to his face.

Sowers was identified as one of the suspects, according to the RPD report. Officers made contact Monday with Sowers at his home, and he was arrested on two outstanding warrants from a different Kentucky State Police case. The charges were receiving stolen property (under $10,000) and theft by deception (under $500).

After being interviewed at the RPD, Sowers also was charged with the home-invasion robbery.

Police are still working to identify the second suspect.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Richmond Police Department at 623-1162.
