DUI report leads to alcohol, drug charges for driver, passenger

BEREA — Berea police, sent Saturday to investigate the report of a drunken driver on Short Line Pike, arrested a driver and her passenger on alcohol and drug charges.

After the vehicle was located and stopped, the driver told the officers she had been drinking and had an open alcohol container inside the vehicle, according to a Berea police news release.

Inside the vehicle, officers found two pill bottles containing 13 clonazepam and 24 diazepam tablets, the release added.

A male passenger had a strong odor of alcohol and also told officers he had been drinking. Police found a diazepam tablet, a wooden marijuana pipe and a small amount of marijuana in his possession, according to the release.

Debra Lunsford, 49, the driver, and William Whiting, 50, both of Berea, were arrested.

Lunsford was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence (first offense), third-degree possession of a controlled substance, and possession of open alcohol container in a motor vehicle.

Whiting was charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place, third-degree possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.  

A Richmond Road traffic stop Aug. 4 led to the arrest of Samuel Long, 33, of Berea on drug and traffic charges.

The officer obtained consent to search and found five hydrocodone tablets in the driver’s pants pocket, according to the police report.

Long, who was unable to produce a driver’s license, was charged with second-degree possession of controlled substance and several other traffic offenses, the report stated.

Between Aug. 8 and 11, Berea police arrested two other people on DUI charges. Two others were arrested on public intoxication charges.

Burglary, theft reports

• On Aug. 7, a resident in the 600 Block of Jefferson Street reported the home had been entered while no one was home, and items valued at $3,600 were taken.

• On Aug. 8, a guest at Econo Lodge reported items valued at almost $1,300 were taken from inside a parked vehicle overnight.

• Items valued at $220 were taken from a vehicle parked overnight in a driveway in the 1000 Block of Hidden Creek Drive, a resident reported Monday.

• A resident in the 400 Block of Jackson Street reported Monday that a bicycle valued at $200 was stolen from the home’s front porch.
