RPD: Man assaults woman, hides in her attic

RICHMOND — A woman suffered injuries to her neck after a man broke into her home Sunday, choked her, threatened her with a knife and chased her into the street, according to a Richmond police report.

He later hid in her attic, and the RPD had to summon its emergency response unit to remove him from the home.

Brandon J. Smith, 31, of Georgetown was charged with second-degree burglary, first-degree wanton endangerment, violation of an emergency protective order, fourth-degree assault, terroristic threatening and first-degree criminal mischief.

Officers were sent to a home on Lowell Avenue at 4:36 a.m. after receiving a report that a woman who had been assaulted in her home.

The woman told police she was awakened at 3:30 a.m. by Smith who was on top of her and choking her. He then struck her in the face several times and make death threats to her, according to the report.

The woman said Smith dragged her from her bedroom into the kitchen where he got a knife. She was able to run out of the home, but Smith chased her and caught her in the street where he again grabbed her by the throat, the report stated.

The woman was able to escape again and made it a neighbor’s house to call police.

The officers reported that Smith was under a domestic violence order that prohibited him from having any contact with the victim or to engage in further acts of violence or abuse.

The victim was treated at St. Joesph Hospital for a a cervical fracture, a cervical sprain and a minor head injury and then released.

The officers checked the woman’s home and found that Smith was hiding in the attic. He refused to come out and threatened to shoot any officer who tried to remove him, according to the report.

The RPD Emergency Response Unit was able to extract Smith from the home at 10:30 a.m. They reported that Smith did significant damage to the ceiling of the home.

He was arrested and taken to the Madison County Detention Center.
