Two charged with prostitution and indecent exposure

RICHMOND — Two people were charged Wednesday evening after they were observed engaging in sexual activity related to prostitution in public, according to Richmond police.

Erin M. Murphy, 25, Mount Vernon, and James J. Phelps, 40, Park Place Drive, both were charged with first-degree indecent exposure and prostitution.

Murphy also was charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place.

Officers were sent at 5:23 p.m. to the area of Race and South Maple streets after receiving a report of a woman walking around naked and then entering a vehicle, according to the RPD report.

An officer reported seeing Murphy naked from the waist down and bent over the front of the vehicle. Phelps was behind the woman and also naked from the waist down with his genitals exposed, the report stated.

Both were detained, charged and then taken to the Madison County Detention Center.

Thefts & burglaries

Thursday

• A complainant reported that two firearms had been stolen from his unsecured vehicle while it was parked at Quality Quarters, North Killarney Lane, during the early morning hours. The victim reported being away from his vehicle for only a brief period of time. The following items were reported missing:  a Remington 12-gauge pump shotgun, model 870, and a Mossberg .22 caliber rifle, Plinkster model.  Estimated loss: $1,000.

Wednesday

• A complainant reported that a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber pistol, model SD, had been stolen from his vehicle some time during the day as he ran errands and made several stops throughout the city. Estimated loss: $323.

  • Mother pleads guilty to allowing child rape

    Deanna Lawson, charged with 20 counts of complicity in the rape and sodomy of a minor, pleaded guilty in Madison Circuit Court on Wednesday.
    Between October 2011 and September 2012, Eric Kelley had sexual relations with Lawson’s two daughters, according to court documents.
    She was charged with complicity after police said they learned Lawson knew of the crimes but didn’t try to stop them or alert authorities.

    Anthony and Kathy Hart, two Madison County residents who pleaded guilty May 21 to prostituting their daughters, won’t be seeing any extra time in jail.
    Both parents, who served time in jail while their charges were pending, were sentenced to probation Thursday in Madison Circuit Court.
