Pills found in suitcase

BEREA — A traffic stop on Chestnut Street last week led to the arrest of a man on drug possession charges.

Jonathan Sparks, 30, of Berea, was charged with first- and second-degree possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

After his vehicle was stopped by Berea police, Sparks was asked to step out and speak to the officer, according to the report.

The officer asked if he had anything illegal in his vehicle, and Sparks reportedly told him that there were pills in a suitcase.

The officers then found several hydocodone and oxycodone tables in the suitcase along with a small amount of marijuana, the report stated.

Woman charged with shoplifting hundreds in merchandise

A Richmond woman was charged Friday with attempting to steal merchandise valued at more than $700 from the Berea Walmart.

Nicole Blackford was charged with theft by unlawful taking (more than $500). She had been detained by Walmart employees when she tried to leave the store without paying for a shopping cart full of merchandise, according to a BPD report.

Items in her cart were at $720.52.

Misdemeanor arrests

From Aug. 21 through Friday, Berea police made the following misdemeanor arrests: three people for shoplifting, three people for public intoxication, one person for alcohol intoxication and one person for driving under the influence of alcohol (first offense).

• Officers were called to Oh! Kentucky Campground to investigate a theft report. Several items were stolen from two vehicles buy some were recovered in a wooded area nearby. Estimated loss: $1,480.

Aug. 20

• Officers were called to O’Reilly Auto Parts to investigate the passing of counterfeit money. A store employee told police a customer made a purchase and passed a counterfeit $100 bill.

• Officers also were called to Walmart in reference to passing of another counterfeit bill. Store employees said a customer made a purchase and passed a counterfeit $50 bill.

    Deanna Lawson, charged with 20 counts of complicity in the rape and sodomy of a minor, pleaded guilty in Madison Circuit Court on Wednesday.
    Between October 2011 and September 2012, Eric Kelley had sexual relations with Lawson’s two daughters, according to court documents.
    She was charged with complicity after police said they learned Lawson knew of the crimes but didn’t try to stop them or alert authorities.

  • No extra jail time for parents on prostitution charge

    Anthony and Kathy Hart, two Madison County residents who pleaded guilty May 21 to prostituting their daughters, won’t be seeing any extra time in jail.
    Both parents, who served time in jail while their charges were pending, were sentenced to probation Thursday in Madison Circuit Court.

    A couple is facing several charges after police said they sold drugs to an undercover officer late last year.
    In December 2013, the Richmond Police Narcotics Unit purchased a quantity of suboxone strips from Ryan Anderson, 30, and Chastity L. King, 28, on two occasions during a covert investigation, according to an RPD news release.
