Traffic stop leads to meth, other drug charges

BEREA — A Feb. 27 traffic stop for a minor traffic violation on Chestnut Street led to a Berea woman’s arrest on three drug charges.

According to a Berea police report, the officer decided to investigate when he noticed the vehicle’s passenger, Karen Kirby, 37, of Berea moving around nervously in the vehicle after he made contact.

After obtaining consent to search the vehicle, the officer noticed a pill bottle on the ground next to the passenger as she exited the vehicle, the report stated. A second pill bottle and a black zipper pouch were stuffed down the front of her pants, it added. Inside the pouch, the office found a small Ziplock bag with two smaller plastic bags containing suspected methamphetamine, along with a small bag of marijuana. Also in the pouch was a clear vial containing clonazepam, methadone and Oxycontin tablets. The pill bottle also contained Oxycontin and clonazepam tablets, the report continued.

Kirby was charged with first-degree possession of methamphetamine, first- and third-degree possession of a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence

Also on Feb. 27, a Berea officer reported observing another vehicle cross over the center line and fog line on Richmond Road. After conducting a traffic stop, the officer noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to the police report.

The driver admitted smoking a bowl of marijuana prior to being stopped, his speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot and he was unsteady on his feet, the report added.

A glass marijuana pipe and a plastic bag containing marijuana were found inside the vehicle, the report continued.

Brandan Simpson, 20, of Crab Orchard was charged with DUI as well as marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession.
