Man charged with attempted murder in sister’s stabbing

Victim is in critical condition

RICHMOND — Richmond police have charged a man with attempted murder after an attack on his sister Friday left her in critical condition with at least 20 stab wounds.

Patrick A. Hamner, 32, also is charged with first-degree burglary, menacing, third-degree terroristic threatening and resisting arrest.

Officers responded at 5:07 p.m. to a home in the 100 block of Woods Trail to investigate a disturbance, according to an RPD report.

The first officer on the scene discovered a woman on the floor who was covered in blood from numerous stab wounds, the report stated. The officer detained Hamner, who was “belligerent and making threats toward the officers as well as the victim,” according to the report.

The victim had allowed Hamner, her brother, to stay at her home but later told him that he would have to leave, the officers reported.

Family members have identified the victim as Billie Morgan.

Hamner left but returned a short time later. He knocked on the door, and when Morgan opened it, he forced his way inside, according to the report.

He shoved his sister to the floor and began kicking her, then stabbing her with a pocket knife and screwdriver, the RPD reported.

Morgan suffered wounds to her face, hand, top of the head, neck, lower abdomen and back. One of the stab wounds was to her ear canal, according to the RPD.

She was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where she was in critical condition Monday morning, the RPD reported.

Hamner was taken to the Madison County Detention Center where he remains under a $75,000 bond, according to online jail records.

Morgan’s sister, Reanna Hamner-Coyt, issued a statement Monday afternoon thanking people who were praying for the injured woman and asked that they continue to do so.

“Billie is working hard on her recovery and still has a very long road ahead of her,” Hamner-Coyt said. “With the support and blessings of her family and close friends, Billie will continue to recover.”
