Officer injured in foot pursuit

RICHMOND — A Richmond police officer suffered a broken wrist Thursday in a fall while pursuing a man accused of attempting to shoplift a TV from Walmart.

Trevor F. Smith, 18, East Irvine Street, was charged with theft by unlawful taking (under $500), first-degree fleeing or evading police, second-degree disorderly conduct and third-degree criminal mischief.

Officers were sent to Walmart at 5 p.m. after receiving a complaint about a shoplifter, according to an RPD report.

Employees told police the suspect, later identified as Smith, tried to leave without paying for a Vizio 50-inch TV. Smith was detained, but he bolted from the store prior to the arrival of police, according to the report.

Officers reported seeing Smith in the O’Charley’s parking lot and approached him. Smith then fled on foot toward Jack Burford Chevrolet with the officers in pursuit, according to the report.

Smith crossed the Eastern Bypass to the Red Lobster parking lot where he was caught and detained by another officer.

One of the officers who was pursuing Smith fell in the car dealer’s parking lot, suffering severe abrasions to both hands and a broken wrist, according to the report. He was treated at Baptist Health Richmond and released.

Man charged with trying to use counterfeit bill

Richmond police charged Thomas Biesty, 49, Irvine, Tuesday in connection with the passing of a counterfeit $50 bill at a local business in August 2013.

A representative of Liquor Mart, 320 Eastern Bypass, reported Aug. 23 that a man attempted to purchase alcohol by presenting a counterfeit $50 bill. When confronted about the fake bill, the man paid with other bills and departed the store in a rush.

A warrant was issued for Biesty’s arrest Tuesday charging him with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

Later that day, Biesty was arrested by Irvine police on the strength of the Madison County warrant. He was lodged in the Estill County Jail.
