Hitachi employees find stolen tool at Boone Square Mini Mall

BEREA — A stolen torque wrench worth $1,200 was returned to Hitachi after factory employees found it at Boone Square Mini Mall.

Officers received a call about the wrench April 22 and went to the business to investigate, according to a Berea Police Department report. The officers were able to retrieve the wrench from Boone Square Mini Mall and return it to Hitachi.

• A complainant told police Friday that his name and bank account information had been used without  his permission to purchase $150 in gift cards at

• Berea Walmart employees reported Friday that several days before someone had stolen computers and other items from the store. The thief put two desktop computers in a shopping cart and covered them with other merchandise, the BPD report stated.

The man left without paying for the items, which are worth a total of $1,001.55.

• A burglary was reported April 24 on Winding Branch Drive. Several appliances were stolen from inside apartments that were under construction. Estimated loss is $1,572.

Misdemeanor arrests

From April 23 to Saturday, Berea police officers made the following misdemeanor arrests: one person for operating a motor vehicle under the influence (first offense), one person with theft by unlawful taking (shoplifting, merchandise valued at $257.14), one person with receipt of a credit card in violation of state law and fraudulent use of a credit card (under $500), and one person with second-degree possession of a controlled substance and operating a motor vehicle under the influence (first offense).

  • Mother pleads guilty to allowing child rape

    Deanna Lawson, charged with 20 counts of complicity in the rape and sodomy of a minor, pleaded guilty in Madison Circuit Court on Wednesday.
    Between October 2011 and September 2012, Eric Kelley had sexual relations with Lawson’s two daughters, according to court documents.
    She was charged with complicity after police said they learned Lawson knew of the crimes but didn’t try to stop them or alert authorities.

  • No extra jail time for parents on prostitution charge

    Anthony and Kathy Hart, two Madison County residents who pleaded guilty May 21 to prostituting their daughters, won’t be seeing any extra time in jail.
    Both parents, who served time in jail while their charges were pending, were sentenced to probation Thursday in Madison Circuit Court.
