Man charged with repeatedly assaulting girlfriend

RPD makes quick arrest in theft, burglary spree

Police charged William G. Tipton, 32, North Third Street, in connection with a series of thefts that occurred the previous night.

Shortly after noon, police took four reports concerning thefts in the Providence Road and Kelsey Drive areas. The thefts were reported as follows:

• A resident in the 1400 block of Providence Road reported that a set of golf clubs had been stolen from his carport overnight. Estimated loss: $355.

• A resident in the 100 block of Kelsey Drive reported that two electric leaf blowers, an electric hedge trimmer and a green extension cord had been stolen from an unlocked storage shed in his backyard overnight. Estimated loss: $210.

• A resident in the 1400 block of Providence Road reported that two sets of golf clubs had been stolen from her parked vehicle overnight. Estimated loss: $1,550.

• A resident in the 100 block of Kelsey Drive reported that a set of golf clubs was stolen from an unlocked shed in her backyard during the overnight hours. Estimated loss: $1,580.

During the immediate follow-up investigation, patrol officers learned that Tipton had been in possession of one of the sets of golf clubs and had transferred the clubs to another party shortly after the theft, according to the report.

Officers found Tipton and recovered all of the stolen property listed above along with a Troy Bilt self-propelled lawn mower that had been reported stolen the previous day by a resident in the 1500 block of Providence Road, the report stated.

All of the stolen items were returned to their owners.

After an interview at the police station, Tipton was charged for the following offenses and lodged in the Madison County Detention Center: theft by unlawful taking (over $500), four counts of theft by unlawful taking (under $500), third-degree burglary, theft by deception (under $500) and possession of drug paraphernalia (pipe, scales and pill bottle found in Tipton’s vehicle).
