3-year-old found alone on Big Hill Avenue

Register Staff Report

RICHMOND — A Richmond man was charged Monday with second-degree wanton endangerment after a passerby found a 3-year-old wandering alone along Big Hill Avenue, clad only in a diaper.

The child was in the care of Robert L. Short, 54, Big Hill Avenue, at the time, according to a Richmond police report.

Officers were sent to the 400 block of Big Hill Avenue at 5:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a young child walking unaccompanied in the area.

Officers learned upon arrival that the 3-year-old had left Short’s residence, crossed a parking lot and Big Hill Avenue before being picked up by a passerby who summoned police, the report stated.

The child was wearing only a diaper in the 38-degree weather, the officer reported.

Short was not aware that the child had left the home, according to the RPD.

Short was charged and taken to the Madison County Detention Center.
