Indiana doctor won’t represent himself in felony case

RICHMOND — The Indiana doctor who earlier asked to represent himself at his wanton-endangerment court proceedings here has hired an attorney.

Dr. Perrin T. Dobyns, 51, of Corydon, Ind., appeared Thursday morning in Madison Circuit Court for a hearing that would have determined whether the judge would allow him to represent himself.

However, Dobyns has hired counsel since his Richmond attorney, Jim Baechtold, withdrew from the case earlier this month. Dobyns will now be represented by Lexington attorney Charles Gore.

“I think (Dobyns) has made a wise move in having you represent him,” Judge Jean C. Logue told Gore.

Dobyns is accused of pointing a BB gun at another driver Sept. 29 on Interstate 75 in Madison County. The incident was caught on a smartphone video by the other driver.

The felony charge of wanton endangerment carries a penalty of one to five years in prison.

Gore said Dobyns is interested in having the case mediated. Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jennifer Smith said Special Judge Julia Adams, a former Madison County Circuit judge, would be contacted to set up a time and date.

In felony mediation, the prosecution and defense each present 30 to 45 minute summaries of their cases to a special judge. Adams will listen and then try to mediate a resolution, with input from the victim, who has the option of being present. The proposed resolution will then be presented to the judge.

A pretrial hearing in the case is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. March 21 in Madison Circuit Court.

Dobyns faces an investigation by the Indiana Medical Licensing Board in connection with the September incident. At the time of his arrest, he worked for the state’s prison system.

The hearing on Dobyns’ medical license was continued earlier this month to Feb. 27. His license has been suspended since October.
