Man faces several charges after altercation with mother, aunt

RICHMOND — Richmond police on Tuesday charged James A. Abshear, 37, of Richmond with several offenses after responding to a domestic complaint.

Just after 10:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Hallie Irvine Street to investigate a disturbance, according to the police report.

The responding officer was told Abshear had broken into his mother’s residence in the 900 block of Race Street (she was not home at the time) and then proceeded to his aunt’s residence on Hallie Irvine Street. After learning of what transpired on Race Street, the aunt alerted Abshear’s mother.

Abshear left his aunt’s residence before his mother arrived, but he later returned and was told to leave, according to the police report.

As his mother attempted to call police, Abshear forced his way into the residence, grabbed and twisted his mother’s arm, took her cellular telephone and fled on foot, the police report stated.

Officers searched the area and sighted Abshear in the 500 block of Orange Street, but he ignored commands to stop and and attempted to flee. However, he was soon caught and detained, the report added.

Both the mother and the aunt suffered minor injuries during their confrontations with Abshear, the report stated.

He was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree burglary, first-degree fleeing or evading police and resisting arrest. Abshear was taken to the Madison County Detention Center, where he remained Thursday afternoon, according to the jail’s online records.

Anyone with information regarding about this case is asked to call Richmond Police at 623-1162.
