Man charged with robbery after shoplifting incident

Register Staff Report

RICHMOND — Robert C. King, 27, of Ballard Drive, was charged Tuesday with second-degree robbery in connection with a shoplifting incident that occurred earlier in the month, according to a Richmond Police Department news release.

Officers were dispatched at 7:09 p.m., Sept. 5, to Walmart to investigate a shoplifting complaint. Upon arrival, the officers learned store employees had seen a man conceal a Surefire Flashlight, valued at $89, on his person and attempt to leave the store without paying.

An employee attempted to detain the man, but was shoved by the suspect, who then fled in a waiting vehicle being driven by a male accomplice. The use of force against the employee elevated the crime from shoplifting to robbery, the release stated.

King was interviewed Tuesday at the police station about the incident and then lodged in the Madison County Detention Center, where he remained Wednesday evening, according to the jail’s online records.
