Detroit man charged with drug trafficking, several other offenses

RICHMOND — After attempting to hide from police officers in the closets of two different locations, Darrelle L. Walton of Detroit was charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance and several other offenses Wednesday evening, according to a Richmond Police Department news release.

About 7:30 p.m., RPD narcotics and bike patrol officers responded to the 200 block of Evansdale Avenue to investigate complaints of drug trafficking.

According to the report, the officers spoke with a resident of one of the apartments in the area. During the course of contact, the officers noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the residence. Upon further investigation, the officers discovered Walton hiding in a bedroom closet the release stated.

Walton provided a false name and address, but officers discovered his true identity. During a search, they found a pill bottle on a living room coffee table containing three packets of suspected heroin and 15 oxycodone pills, the release stated.

After Walton was taken into custody, officers cuffed and seated on the apartment’s porch, but he fled a short while later. He forced entry into a nearby apartment and was again found hiding in a closet. Walton kicked and resisted officers as they removed him, the release stated.

In addition to drug trafficking, Walton was charged with third-degree assault of a police officer, second-degree burglary, resisting arrest, second degree fleeing or evading police and giving an officer a false name or address.

He was lodged in the detention center, where he remained Monday evening, according to the jail’s online records.
