3 local businesses burglarized Thursday

RICHMOND — Three Richmond businesses reported break-ins that occurred late Wednesday night or Thursday, and in all three instances the front glass doors were smashed in.

The manager of Concord Cleaners, 525 Eastern Bypass, reported that the store had been broken into over night. Several items were rummaged through but nothing was stolen, according to the Richmond police.

The same business was burglarized in a similar manner Feb. 16 after the glass on the sliding door of the drive-thru area was broken out. In that incident, some loose change was reported stolen, according to the RPD.

Also on Wednesday, the owner of Doggie Livin’, 110 St. George St., reported the business was broken into during the night, and a small amount of cash was stolen from a donation box.

In the third report, officers were called to a possible burglary in progress at 1-75 Yamaha at 171 N. Keeneland Dr.

When officers arrived, they found the front door had been broken out. The officers did not find anyone in the building or in the area.

The owner was summoned, and it was reported that a small amount of cash had been stolen from the cash register.

In addition to the Concord Cleaners burglary in February, two other Richmond business – Madison Flower Shop on East Main Street and Air Economics on East Irvine Street – were burglarized the same night. Entry was gained in those business by breaking out glass in a door.

Kohl’s employee struck by car during shoplifting incident

Police have arrested an Irvine woman who they allege struck a Kohl’s employee – twice – with an open car door as he tried to stop her from leaving the parking lot with stolen merchandise.

Dawn Estes, 31, was charged Wednesday with second-degree robbery and second-degree wanton endangerment.

On Feb. 20, an officer was sent to Kohl’s to investigate a shoplifting incident, according to a news release from Richmond police.

Employees told the officer two women were seen concealing store merchandise in their purses, the release stated. One of the women left the store so she could reposition her vehicle closer to the front of the store.

She left her purse in the vehicle and re-entered Kohl’s, meeting up with the other woman, the employees told police. Carrying several stolen purses with even more items in them, the women left the store.

A Kohl’s employee confronted and attempted to detain the women as they approached their vehicle. The driver, who police later identified as Estes, refused to comply and got in the vehicle.

The worker tried to stop the other woman from getting in, but Estes reportedly threatened to hit him with the vehicle if he didn’t move, the police were told.

Estes then put the vehicle in reverse and backed up, causing the open passenger door to strike the Kohl’s employee, the RPD said. She repeated the move a second time, hitting him again.

The other woman was able to get in the vehicle, and they fled from the parking lot.

The employee was not injured in the incident, the RPD stated.

A warrant was issued Feb. 23 for Estes’ arrest and on Wednesday, a Estill County Sheriff’s deputy served the warrant. Estes attempted to give him false information about her identity, the sheriff’s deputy reported.

She was taken to the Estill County Detention Center pending her arraignment in Madison District Court.
