RICHMOND — Police have upgraded an assault charge to murder against a man accused of running his girlfriend’s brother over with a car.

Jeremy Rice, 21, is accused of fatally injuring 22-year-old Joshua Childers Saturday night after Childers intervened in a fight between Rice and Childers’ sister.

Joshua Childers died Monday evening at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He suffered a head injury in the incident that occurred on Evansdale Avenue, according to Richmond police.

Rice was taken into custody shortly afterward on Depot Road, the police reported.

He initially was charged with first-degree assault in connection with Childers’ injuries and fourth-degree assault against Childers’ sister.

A murder charge carries a sentence of 20 to 50 years or life in prison.

Rice remains in the Madison County Detention Center under a $1 million bond, according to a jail official.

County Attorney Marc Robbins said Rice will be arraigned Friday on the murder charge via video in Madison District Court. He is scheduled for a pretrial hearing at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
