Reunions are among the best experiences we enjoy

Dick Ham
Register News Writer

I was just thinking the other day about reunions, the reason being, I just met for my 50th college graduation reunion. I graduated from Georgetown College in May of 1958. My class met May 9-10 to celebrate that milestone. It has become a tradition for the 50-year class to meet in conjunction with spring commencement.

We began with a banquet on Friday evening. I saw classmates I hadn’t seen since that day in May of 1958 when we walked across the stage in John L. Hill Chapel and were awarded our degrees. We reminisced, told stories about experiences we had at the college and about our favorite professors.

On Saturday morning, we, in caps and gowns, sat alongside the class of 2008 for commencement. I had the honor of representing my class as I officially inducted the class of 2008 into the Alumni Association. I was honored to have been chosen to do that. Our Alumni Association has never been in better hands than it is now, with Alumni Director Mike Calhoun. I continue to be very proud to hold a degree from an outstanding college.

In just a few weeks, I’ll attend another reunion. I am a graduate of Louisville Male High School. I was in the class of 1953, the last all-boys class. The Alumni Association of Male High has an annual reunion for all those who graduated 50 years or more ago. That, too, will be a joyous occasion.

I get together with friends I grew up with and went to church with every year, and attend a family reunion at least every three years. I suppose these things, although happy times for anyone, are more important to us as we grow older. I urge you, never miss a reunion, they are special.

A personal word

I, like most of you, am concerned about gasoline prices, that are causing prices of all other consumer goods to rise. The price of groceries seems to have gone up every time I go to the store. My heart goes out to young couples with several children. I know they spend a great deal more at the grocery than I do.

Then, there are those of us who are retired. At least those who are still working may receive a cost-of-living increase or some may even look forward to an occasional raise in salary. Those of us who are retired don’t receive raises, we simply have to cut back and do without things we’d like to have, and in some circumstances, do without things we actually need.

I was in Louisville a few days ago to sing for a funeral, and the price of regular gasoline was 3.95.9 a gallon. If the news is correct, that is just the beginning. Who knows, I may be forced to plow up my entire backyard to plant a garden instead of the small plot to grow tomatoes.

Trivia answer

Red Foley, the Kentucky born country singer’s real name was, Clyde Julian Foley. Foley was the father-in-law of Pat Boone.

Trivia question

What modern convenience owes it’s discovery to a melted Hershey bar in scientist Percy LeBaron Spencer’s pocket?

Thought for the day
